The Portsmouth Royal Navy and Royal Marines Coarse Angling Association (PRN & RM CAA) was formed in 1972 by the amalgamation of HMS Sultan and HMS Dryad Angling Clubs.  The Sultan Angling Club had already formed a committee and they took over the running of the newly formed Portsmouth RN & RM CAA. 

Both waters were fished with the permission of the incumbent Commanding Officer and from the outset the association formed a strong liaison with both the establishments who, after consultation, allowed the association to carry out work on and around the waters to improve safety, maintain the fishing platforms, and control the bank side vegetation.  These agreements also enabled the association to put together a fish stocking programme.  This work continues today under the guidance of the associations Water Managers. 

As the association matured it was considered that it would be in its best interest to draw up agreements with the two establishments laying down sets of rules.   In July 1982 an agreement between Southwick Park Naval Recreation Centre (SPNRC) was drawn up which gave the association casual membership of SPNRC and the use of the Centre car park.  In return PRN & RM CAA pays an annual subscription to use the car park and provides Association membership cards for the SPNRC members to fish Southwick Lake.

Later that year, in November, formal approval was given for an agreement to be drawn up between HMS Dryad and Portsmouth RN & RM CAA with regard to angling facilities in Southwick Park.  This was signed by the association Chairman and approved by the Captain of HMS Dryad.  When the Defence College of Police and Personnel Administration (DCPPA) first moved into Southwick in the summer of 2005 the association was given a temporary licence to fish the lake.  After negotiation with Defence Estates (DE) the association now hold a licence to fish Southwick Lake which runs until 2114.

In 1993 a similar agreement was made between HMS Sultan and PRN & RM CAA where general rules were set out and guidelines issued to Association members wishing to fish at Rowner Moat.  In the same year Sultan’s Space Allocation Committee allocated Casemate 39 to RN &RM CAA for use as the Association Club Headquarters.  The casemate continues to be use by the committee for their monthly meeting and as the venue for the draw when matches are fished at Sultan.

Although Service membership has fallen and numbers fluctuate the association membership is currently around 400.
